Now list the duties of the job.

List the duties starting from the most important and working towards the least important.

Use action words, which say what a person has to do. Be careful about describing jobs with general terms like "assists" doing a task or "participates in" a task. Be clear about what responsibility the person has in the task. The person needs to know what he or she is responsible for doing.

Describe how the task should be done. If service should be friendly, if reports need to be provided on time, make sure you say so.

Action Words

When completing the skills and abilities section of your resume, make sure they contain action words. Positive action verbs help to describe your skills, activities, and knowledge. Sometimes it is difficult to think of an appropriate action verb. Here is a site that has a whole raft of action words - go for it!


Duties for Sales Clerk, Sporting Goods Store


1. Greet customers promptly and discuss the type, quality and quantity of sporting goods merchandise that would be best for the customers.
2. Advise customers on use and care of the merchandise.
3. Fit and order or select customized merchandise for individual customers.
4. Provide accurate information about prices, credit terms, trade-in allowances, warranties and delivery dates.
5. Prepare merchandise for purchase.
6. Prepare sales contracts and accept cash, cheque, credit card or automatic debit payment.
7. Set up and maintain displays of merchandise.
8. Maintain sales records for inventory control.
9. Maintain store and stock room in neat and organized fashion.
