Engage in Life-Long Learning -

There’s more than one way to obtain education and training. Traditional learning is through a classroom setting. That setting may not be ideal for everyone. Have you considered a co-op program, apprenticeship, competency-based learning or distance learning?

Each of these can expand learning outside the classroom setting. A description of each is
provided within this section.

Co-op Programs

Students enrolled in co-op education alternate between terms of paid work experience and classroom study. Co-op programs take about 1 year longer to complete but the students gain the benefit of work experience. This enhances both their classroom learning and future employment potential, while earning money to help finance their education.

The University of Regina and SIAST-Palliser Campus offer a wide variety of co-op education programs. The University of Saskatchewan has 3 co-op programs, including engineering, agriculture and computer sciences.

Co-op programs are also identified in What To Study database as the Learning Method of Co-op. You can also access a printed copy of the What to Study? guide through such sources as the CanSask Services, your school, libraries and career counsellor.

Competency Based Learning

Competency-based learning allows students to learn at their own speed and have instructional assistance available when they need it. Students use guides that list the skills they need to learn.

They work through their learning guide at their own pace and when they're ready, the skills that they've learned are tested. If successful, the student moves on to the next guide. If not, the student studies and/or practices further until they master it.

This learning format is used by SIAST campuses to deliver selected programs.

If you have a specific SIAST program in mind and are interested in knowing whether it is delivered through competency-based learning, check What To Study.

Distance Learning

Education courses and programs may be delivered using a range of formats, including via the Internet, television, correspondence and off-campus courses. Have a look through some of these websites to explore the possibilities.
